18-year-old Samuela Mataele is charged with second degree murder, terroristic threatening and a firearms charge for allegedly shooting and killing 65-year-old Josh Liava'a.
Liava'a was a former New Zealand police officer and was married to a Tongan princess at one point.
Liava'a is related to Mataele and was living with the family at their Kahaluu home when the shooting occurred last weekend.
Mataele's older brother says his younger sibling has been struggling with schizophrenia since he was 16 years old.
"It's a double tragedy. We're doing everything we can to cooperate with authorities and to just help out with Sam, to help him with his mental illness and sickness and to give our family peace because our Deyno is dead," said Jay Mataele, Samuela's older brother.
Samuela's bond is set at $250,000.
