Two friends tried to pull the woman out of the water until rescue crews arrived. Firefighters, lifeguards and paramedics tried to revive the woman, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Our initial understanding is that she jumped in the water and attempted to get back onshore, but wasn’t able to,” said Capt. Rick Maurer of the Honolulu Fire Department. “She made a couple more attempts, but was unsuccessful, began to struggle and then the fatigue set in.”
The woman’s name was not released.
No one else, including the woman’s friends, was injured, officials said.
