Stop the smoke for fire safety weekUPDATED 6:55 AM HST Aug 18, 2014Video Transcript
Fire fighters are sounding the alarm, to remind residents to check their smoke detectors before they are needed in an emergency. Smoke alarms can give residents enough warning to get to safety. But firefighters have found some elderly residents may not hear an alarm... young children may sleep through it... And some alarms aren't working properly. TERRY SEELIG, BATTALION CHIEF 13:28-13:38 "ITS PROBABLY 70- 80% OF HOMES HAVE SMOKE ALARMS, BUT OF THOSE THAT DO THERE IS AND EQUAL PERCENTAGE THAT ARE WORKING" Along with having working smoke alarms, fire fighters want families to have emergency plans -- so everyone knows what to do. Students are helping to spread the message by creating murals that will be displayed at Oahu fire stations during fire prevention week -- October 5th through the 11th.
