Young. Tom Apple is out-- as the University of Hawaii, Manoa chancellor... KITV4's Nana Ohkawa has tonights top story. Pam,. Two administrators at the campus and an additional source confirmed his removal. All three sources have asked that their identities NOT be revealed. 22 Tom Apple has been chancellor of University of Hawaii Manoa since 2012. He entered his position during a rocky school year. That included the Stevie Wonder Blunder ---UH was scammed out of a 200-thousand dollar deposit for the concert that turned out to be fake. As well as the ouster of then athletic director Jim Donovan. 312 THERE'S BEEN A SERIES OF ISSUES BEGINNING WITH THE CONCERT, THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AND SO ON AND SO FORTH THAT HAVE PLAGUED HIM SINCE THE MOMENT HE STEPPED ON CAMPUS 27 J.N. Musto, executive director of U-H Professional Assembly the bargaining agent for all faculty members... And Apple's friend--says because of systemic problems within the university the chancellor didn't have a chance from the start. To him.. it's no surprise that Apple is being ousted. 105 I THINK IT'S PLAYING OUT A DECISION THAT WAS MADE PROBABLY LAST WINTER OR SPRING AND I THINK WHAT IT TOOK WAS THE APPOINTMENT OF LASSNER AS PRESIDENT 117 BEFORE HE FELT HE WAS IN A PLACE WHERE DECISION COULD BE MADE 126 Since the start of his tenure--Apple has had a tumultuous relationship with some department deans. That includes the director of the UH Cancer Center Dr. Michele Carbone. 559 I PERSONALLY BELIEVE THAT THE MOTIVATING FACTOR FOR HIS DISMISSAL IS WHAT HAPPENED AT THE CANCER CENTER AND HIS ATTEMPT AS CHANCELLOR TO REPLACE CARBONE AS THE DIRECTOR 10 Efforts to contact Apple and the Board of Regents were unsuccessful. The University would not confirm his firing but released a statement in part saying: "Tom Apple is the Chancellor of UH Manoa and President Lassner continues to work with him to address the challenges facing UH Manoa." UH Cancer Center Driector Dr. Carbone says he has not received any official notification in the change of the chancellor's status. He says-quote---"I remain committed to working with President Lassner and the people of Hawaii." Tom Apple received his doctorate in physical chemistry from the University of Delaware Musto says if Apple stays in Hawaii he would most likely transition to teaching Chemistry.
