Hundreds of Hawaii candidates must file a report showing who's giving them money and how they're spending it, and the penalties for missing that deadline will hit more than their pocketbooks.

By midnight Friday morning, all 244 candidates running for state, county and city offices had to file online, what's called a 1st Preliminary Primary Report.

"And that's so people before they vote can look at your record and see is this the candidate that supports what you as a voter is interested in," said Kristin Izumi-Nitao, who is the Executive Director for Hawaii's Campaign Spending Commission.

That report includes activity in the last six months, and as for the closely watched Mayoral race, from January to the end of June:

• Former Governor Ben Cayetano has raised close to $900,000.
  
• Former Acting Mayor Kirk Caldwell raised over $500,000.
  
• Mayor Peter Carlisle raised just under $200,000.

Izumi-Nitao said just few clicks on their website will get you to those reports, which also show how much cash each candidate has on hand, how much they've spent, and what they owe.

In the mayoral race, Caldwell added plenty of padding to his war chest this period, but still holds a debt of $188,000.  Cayetano owes $13,000, and Carlisle owes none.

"Chances are we typically don't get everybody filing on time," said Izumi-Nitao.

The commission is still waiting for a number of candidates to file.
