The Hawaii Police Department has initiated an investigation into an allegation of Voter Fraud on Hawaii Island.

The investigation was launched based on information provided by the Hawaii County Office of Elections involving elections conducted in 2010.

Voter Fraud, under section 19.3.5 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes, is a class C felony.

The investigation is being handled by Detectives of the Area I Criminal Investigation Section.

At this time, no other details will be released by police as it is an active investigation.

The Office of the County Clerk said it will not provide comment since it is an ongoing investigation.

County clerk said last month an audit of the county's voter rolls found four people voted twice in 2010 elections and between 50 and 60 people were registered more than once.

Her office and leadership are also under scrutiny because polls on the island opened late on primary election day this year.
