Lawmakers get straight to work on first day
The Hawaii State Legislature kicked off its 27th Legislative Session Wednesday at the Hawaii State Capitol.
There was new leadership in both the Senate and the House.
Senate President Shan Tsutsui took the lieutenant governor position after Brian Schatz was appointed to succeed the late Sen. Daniel Inouye in the U.S. Senate.
Sen. Donna Mercado Kim was chosen by her peers to be the new Senate President.
Rep. Joe Souki believes he has the votes to be the new Speaker of the House. Current Speaker Calvin Say says he will not be a candidate for the Speaker of the House for the 2013-2014 legislative sessions.
