you were outside just after 7:30 last night, you may have seen something strange in the sky. KITV4's Yunji de Nies has some answers about those bizarre sights. Yunji? Paula, our newsroom was flooded with calls and emails from viewers last night, trying to understand what they were seeing. We now have video of the source of all that confusion! This is the first test flight off Kauai of a new missile defense system designed to protect NATO forces in Europe from a ballistic missile attack. The Pentagon tells KITV that last night the Missile Defense Agency and the Navy tracked a simulated target and fired a missile to intercept it 15 The streaks of light the sky our viewers saw were the shifting contrails of the Aegis missile as the upper level winds twisted the smoke trails. The National weather service says conditions in the atmosphere were just right to cause those contrails. 30 2642 NEAR THE SURFACE, WE DON'T HAVE MUCH FLOW AT ALL, YOU HAVEN'T HAD THE TRADEWINDS, IT'S BEEN MUGGY AND HUMID, RIGHT? WHAT WE'RE ACTUALLY HAVING WITH THE MOISTURE, WE CAN ACTUALLY GET THE CONTRAILS WITH THE HIGH LEVELS, ESPECIALLY IN THAT SOUTHWEST FLOW, THERE'S ENOUGH MOISTURE TO CAUSE CONTRAILS. 2657 And that's why we got so many emails of pictures like this - some viewers telling us the light show lasted between 5 to 10 minutes. Lots of theories on the source - from UFO's to a message from up above. But now we know the real story. And we could see these again. The pentagon says that next year, they will do another similar test.
