Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed a bill into law Wednesday making it illegal for tanning salons to allow minors under 18 to use the equipment.
If violated, the Department of Health can impose fines of up to $250 for a first violation and $500 for subsequent violations.
Sen. Roz Baker applauded the bill, saying many people don't know that artificial tanning delivers 10 to 15 times higher the radiation than the mid-day sun.
Earlier this year, medical experts testified before a senate committee and urged lawmakers to limit use of the beds.
The Cancer Action Network says skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the country, but opponents claim tanning beds are safer than pure sunshine.
