The Maui Police Commission is processing nearly 20 applications from those seeking to be the county's next chief.
Commission Chair Roger Dixon says the number of qualified applicants may change after reviews are done.
The volunteer commission will select Gary Yabuta's replacement. He retired in July to become director of the federal High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas in Hawaii. Deputy Chief Clayton Tom is acting chief.
The Maui News reports applicants for the job that comes with an annual salary of $135,000 include Tom, other current department brass and retired officers.
The selection committee is expected to provide an update at a commission meeting on Wednesday.
