Mufi Hannemann filed papers Tuesday to make his run for Governor as an independent candidate. He also introduced the man he hopes will be his running mate.
Former Honolulu Parks and Recreation Director Les Chang is running for Lieutenant Governor as an independent.
Hanneman has been in politics for decades, but was soundly defeated in the democratic primary for governor four years ago. He calls this race a referendum on leadership and says Hawaii is ready for a new choice.
"Life is all about choice and about options. That's why Les and I are running. We want to present the people of Hawaii with another choice, another option on the ballot," said Hannemann.
If elected, Hannemann would be the first independent to hold the state's highest office.
Hannemann has not released any official figures, but says fundraising has been going well.
