As gas prices climb nationwide, the average price in Hilo has reached a record high.
AAA Hawaii says Hilo set a new record Thursday of $4.66 a gallon, breaking the previous record of $4.65 set in July 2008. Hilo's average is seven cents more than last week, 38 cents more than last month and 51 cents more than this time last year.
The statewide average for regular unleaded is $4.50 a gallon - the highest average in the country. That's six more cents than a week ago, 25 cents more than a month ago and 36 cents more than a year ago.
California has the second most expensive gas in the country with an average price of $4.34, followed by Alaska with an average price of $4.29.
