Starting Tuesday, West Oahu residents will not need to make the long trip to Honolulu International Airport when flying to Maui. Mokulele Airlines is moving into Kalaeloa airport.
The airline will offer service from Kalaeloa to Kahului. The airline plans to have three round-trip flights per day to Kahului.
One big difference fliers will notice as compared with flying out of Honolulu International Airport is the lack of TSA checkpoints. Because the airlines Cessna Caravan planes hold nine or less passengers the airline is able to bypass TSA security requirements. In fact, it's only recommended that you show up 30 minutes before your scheduled flight
The first flight takes off at 12:45 pm Tuesday and the airline has indicated interest in expanding flights to other locations in Maui County and possibly the big island as well.
A special promotional rate of $99 round-trip has been extended for tickets purchased by the end of July and flown by the end of August.
