Thanks for watching KITV4 News Online , I'm Jill Kuramoto. Kuhio Beach is looking almost like a BEACH again today. Last night crews pushed sand from down the beach-- to fill in the area with exposed concrete structures. The area will be assessed again today. The added sand is a temporary fix. City officials are looking at ways to make the fix more permanent. Meanwhile on Oahu's North Shore, the city and DLNR is allowing a homeowner to move sand into an area between Rocky Point and Sunset Beach that has suffered extreme erosion. DLNR says 6 to 8 homes are threatened by the erosion, which is being blamed on consistent swells from the same direction. A 10 to 18 foot swell is predicted to hit the North Shore this weekend. Back here in the islands... Swimmers are being warned to stay out of the water-- if it's brown. Because of all the RAIN earlier this week- A brown water advisory was issued for the areas from Kahe power plant to Paradise Cove-- The department of health is advising people to stay out because of possible pesticides, animal fecal matter and other flood debris. The U-S-S Arizona Memorial re-opened at 7 this morning. It's the first day it'll be open since the federal government shutdown. Yesterday , disappointed visitors found out that the national memorial needed an extra day to re-open. The first boat sailed at 8 this morning. On Kauai... Kauai Community College will hold a blessing ceremony today -- for its new Daniel K. Inouye Technology Center. The late senator's widow - Irene -- and Son - Ken -- are expected to present remarks. The 18-thousand square foot center is home to the school's various electronics labs. Senator Inouye was KEY in the creation and equipping of the program. The University of Hawaii SLASHED its funding for the Daniel K Inouye Center. The Board of Regents approved a supplemental budget yesterday that included a request for 5 million dollars IN STATE BONDS to finance the Center. The original proposal was for 27.5 MILLION DOLLARS. The amended request was made after former Inouye aide Jennifer Sabas-- testifying on behalf of the Inouye family--- asked the UH leadership to slow down the project. Kaiser Permanente is attempting to set a record for the most mammograms completed in 24 hours! Staff were going NON-STOP yesterday-- with over 240 screenings at 5 Kaiser clinics in Hawaii -- and THOUSANDS MORE scheduled NATIONWIDE. Doctors say mammograms catch more than 95 PERCENT of cases. Anne Fujimori is a 6-year survivor. And she knows... getting a mammogram... ultimately saved her life. 1058-10 SOMETIMES YOU MIGHT SAY, WHY GO THROUGH WITH ALL THIS BUT IT'S WELL WORTH IT AND LIVING TODAY, BEING A 6-YEAR SURVIVOR, VERY IMPORTANT. 1715-25 MAMMORGRAMS ARE CLEARLY NOT FUN, BUT THAT SIMPLE TEST THAT TAKES A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME CAN ACTUALLY SAVE THEIR LIVES. Doctors say improved technology and higher-skilled staff ... are now FREQUENTLY catching cancer well before it can be felt by hand.
