A Maui Community Correctional Center inmate escaped from custody for a brief time Monday morning, according to public safety officials.
Kristopher Sharrott was being transported to the Wailuku courthouse for a pretrial hearing on robbery and theft charges.
The transport van arrived at court at around 8:25 a.m. As Adult Corrections officers were unloading the van, Sharrott tried to escape. Sharrott was on the loose for about 100 yards before a corrections officer caught him.
Sharrott was shackled during transport, but he somehow got the leg shackles off. Sheriffs are investigating the incident.
Public safety officials say Sharrott will be charged with escape.
