rebirth of Palama ... Good evening, I'm Kenny Choi. And I'm Yunji de Nies.. The state has major plans to rebuild Mayor Wright Homes. But that has some residents concerned about what will happen to them... KITV4's Brenton Awa has our top story. 1 21 38 102 115 2738 - Look up name "IF YOU LOOK INSIDE OUR KITCHEN AND BATHROOMS, THERES A LOT OF PEOPLE HERE THAT THEIR PLACE NEEDS TO FIX, BATHROOMS AND KITCHENS, IT'S NOT GOOD INSIDE." People living at Mayor Wright Homes have been saying it for years -- this place needs a make-over... Now, those changes have serious support from high places. 113-121 - GOVERNOR ABERCROMBIE "MAYOR WRIGHT HOUSING IS ABOUT TO BE REBORN. NOT JUST REVITALIZED OR IMPROVED BUT REBORN." That's the message out of the state capitol today... But the news apparently was slow to make it to many of these tenants who were surprised to hear that the state is looking to completely re-develop this 20-acre-lot. 3142 - Hilda Urita "WE HAVENT HEARD ANYTHING, WE HAVE NO WORD WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN TO US. 3007 - Tenant "THEY TALK ABOUT RENOVATION AND IM KIND OF WORRIED BECAUSE IM NOT TOO SURE IF WE CAN COME BACK HERE ANYTIME WE WANT AFTER THE RENNOVATION BECAUSE IT MIGHT TAKE YEARS OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT." These units have been low income housing for more than 60-years. Now the state wants to hire a developer to modernize this place... Out with the old buildings and in with the new. 841-848 REP. MARK HASHEM - HOUSE DISTRICT 18 "I DON'T THINK THE PUBLIC UNDERSTANDS. THIS WILL CHANGE PALAMA AND IT WILL CHANGE PALAMA AND IT WILL CHANGE PALAMA FOREVER GOING FORWARD." 434-451 DAVID GIERLACH - HPHA BOARD CHAIR "OUR VISION FOR MAYOR WRIGHT IN THE FUTURE IS A MIXED DEVELOPMENT THAT DOESN'T GHETTOIZE PEOPLE, THAT REPLACES UNIT FOR UNIT WITH WHAT WE HAVE BUT WITH MORE DENSITY AND DIFFERENT KINDS OF INCOME LEVELS LIVING IN THIS VITAL SECTION OF OUR COMMUNITY." Some residents worry about where they'll live during the construction... Others don't mind the inconvenience... encouraged that these rundown buildings might finally get some much needed attention. 2815 - Look up name "DON'T BE SCARED, CALM DOWN, LETS SEE WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN YEAH." While specific plans have yet to be announced, the state says if and when construction starts -- the residents living at Mayor Wright Homes will be relocated to a place nearby to stay at and when constructions done, the state says those residents will be able to move back in for the same amount of rent they're currently paying.
