The Maui Humane society says a cat in upcountry Maui died from the Panleukopenia virus.
The highly contagious disease make cats lethargic and sick and can kill them in a matter of days.
Since the initial outbreak the Maui Humane society confirmed four other cats may have been infected and passed out flyers to get the word out to pet owners to get their cats vaccinated.
"The vaccine is highly protective. If they can vaccinate their cats, most cats would be considered protected from the disease," said Dr. Miyo Miyasaki-Kim of the Maui Humane Society.
Dr. Kim says it's a common virus on the mainland, but not here on the islands and they don't know how it arrived.
