Shredded by a hurricane, then charred by fire- STILL Coco Palms is on the rebound, and KITV4 is the ONLY station getting a sneak peek inside tonight. Good evening and thanks for joining us. I'm Paula Akana. A fourth of July fire caused 600-THOUSAND dollars worth of damage to the resort ONCE made famous by Elvis Presley- but the developer says its just a speed bump on the path to revitalization. KITV 4's Cam Tran takes us inside the unpolished gem for an exclusive look at the damage and talks about what some hope ... are better days ahead. Plumes of black smoke spewed out of the Coco Palms resort on Kauai as a fire ravaged the historic hotel on Independence Day. TG 00:36 IT WAS ALMOST AS IF SOMEONE WAS PLAYING A LATE APRIL FOOLS JOKE ON US But it was no joke. The massive fire took Kauai firefighters two hours to contain and three days to extinguish. TG 00:45:02 IT DEFINITELY WAS A KICK IN THE GUT, IT HURT PRETTY BAD It's pain that Tyler Greene with Coco Palms Hui LLC, the group hoping to redevelop the resort, is still trying fathom as he shows KITV 4 the damage. TG 00: 59 THE FIRE MOSTLY EFFECTED THE LOBBY, AS YOU CAN SEE THIS IS THE REMAINS OF WHAT ONCE, THIS WILL BE THE MOST TIME CONSUMING AREA TO REBUILD 01:15 This big pile of rubble used to be the lobby area. The iconic breezeway where the massive conch shell used to hang is charred and the shell fell into the lagoon. The fire also damaged around a dozen guest rooms on the second floor of the bar. Despite the destruction Greene says he plans on rebuilding. TG 01:45 WE'RE STILL CHARGING AHEAD WE'RE GOING TO KEEP OUR HEAD UP AND KEEP MOVING FORWARD OF GETTING COCO PALMS UP AND GOING WE'RE STILL SLATED TO BE OPEN AND HOPING TO BE OPEN BY JANUARY 2017 AND HOPEFULLY THIS IS JUST A SPEED BUMP ALONG THE WAY. 01:54 Greene says it's too early to tell how much the fire could affect the cost of development which is already slated at 125 million dollars. 01:22 A LOT OF THIS WOULD HAVE NEEDED TO GO REGARDLESS HOWEVER ITS MUCH EASIER TO DEMO SOMETHING WHEN ITS IN TACT INSTEAD OF HAVING A PILE OF RUBBLE TO DEAL WITH 01:34 Despite the setbacks, the investors plan on submitting permit requests in a few weeks to get the re-development back on track. Greene says he even plans on replacing the iconic conch shell damaged by the fire Cam Tran, KITV 4 News. The Kauai Fire department says the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
