Family members say 39-year-old Jens Magelssen was showing his handgun to a friend during a barbecue Saturday at his Sierra Drive home when it accidentally went off.
He was rushed to The Queen's Medical Center where he was pronounced brain dead Monday.
Family members say Magelssen moved here from Washington state and joined the HPD to be closer to his 8-year-old son.
"He was a wonderful father. I've known him since he was a small child. He had a kind, gentle heart. That's what everyone says about him. He was a very, very dedicated father," said Mark Magelssen, Jen's uncle.
Family members say they are hoping the family tragedy will bring love and life to others through the donation of Jens Magelssen's organs.
A memorial service for Magellson will be held Thursday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hawaii Kai Church of Latter Day Saints Chapel.
The public is welcome to attend.
