Tonight KITV4's getting specifics as to how 800 votes vanished on Election night, and when they turned up! It was a single memory card containing data from hundreds of ballots that was processed but NOT counted until this past weekend. KITV4's Catherine Cruz shows us... Even though elections officials spotted the problem Wednesday... They didn't say anything about it until two days later! It's our top story tonight at 6-30. 20 109 Every vote counts but it wasnt until the elections staff was counting the Big island special election that the public learned that the tally would include 800 votes cast by maui residents that failed to get counted the first time ELections chief Scott nago had some explaining to do. today he blamed the oversight on human error. -- Scott 3 :17- 3:29 -" It was an error made. That's why we have an audit after the election to catch these thingswas big number. Thats not what we like to see but the audit did catch that and thats why we were able to add those in." The elections office asures that the electronic cards were locked up in a metal box like this until the time they had elections observers inplace to ensure the processof reading those ballots were followed. But critics called thislatest problem shameful. Today the republican party issued this statement. " its not surprising this would hapen It seesm the office of eletions cannot get their act together to uphold one of themost important pillars of our democraces. It is a shame." Nago said in hindsight he wishes he had issued a public statement as soon as the error was discovered instead of waiting until the Friday's election. - scott 635- 6:40 - We got the message. And the message is?? It shouldnt happen The democratic party says it wants to make sure something like this never happens again. So does Nago. He wants to move up the audits on election night-- and not waiting until the following week. He is also working with venders to come up with different proceedures re-reading cards. Nago will face more questions when he faces the Elections Commission on Friday. CC KITV4 news.
