The Hilo International Airport is set to get over $2 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The money is for upgrades at the airport as well as the installation of a 12,000-foot security fence with an end goal of improving security at the facility and keeping travelers safe.
The U.S. Senate is taking action this week on the transportation appropriations bill for the next fiscal year.
Hawaii's Senator Schatz released a statement that said:
"Investing in our airport infrastructure is critical to ensuring our state's transportation system operates safely and securely and our tourism industry remains strong."
