A 36-year-old woman was flown out of the Kahaualea Forest Reserve on Wednesday after she sprained her ankle on a hiking trip to see an active lava flow.
Fire rescue crews were called at around 5 p.m.
The woman was with five others in the group along with two guides from the Ahiu Hawaii Tours. She sprained her ankle while walking on muddy and unstable ground.
Fire officials say the sky was overcast with a light drizzle. The ground was already saturated by the recent rain.
A county helicopter transported the entire group to a safe landing zone in the Fern Forest Subdivision.
The woman was examined by medic personnel from the Volcano Fire Station and required no transport or other assistance from fire crews.
