High jumpers compete in grocery store produce sectionUPDATED 4:58 AM HST Apr 22, 2014Video Transcript
A big bonus tonight for Grocery shoppers in Waukee. And its not what most of them expected. Todd Magel was there for a very tall, world first. Some of the best high jumpers in the world showed off their skills at Drake Relays exhibition....all set right in the middle of the produce isles at Hy-Vee. Near the pineapples... next to the Deli... And right past the Almonds... It's first of its kind hi jump extravaganza. to be right here in the front row, Never been done before and I think it's amazing. Drake relays organizers have learned the power of bringing their event from the stadium to the people. And they cleared an entire Hy-Vee produce and fruit dept to make room for the star studded event. The jumpers...like =olympic silver medalist Erik Kynard love the idea. you have to take banana peels into consideration, you have to take in pedestrians, carts little kids and lot to take in consideration and try not to kill yourself And the crowd loves it too. first of all they're tall they're good athletes. And then the speed. It's amazing how they will start at the back of the our hy vee store and run all the way up to the front and run up here in a matter of seconds. This is all for fun.. the hi jumpers will be back Saturday for the real competition at the official relays. But knowing hundreds of grocery shoppers probably watched hi jumping for the first time? That raises the bar for these amazing athletes. If it's creating more buzz about track and field and getting more fans for our sport it's a good thing Normally at a track and field event fans are so far away from the athletes. The best thing about todays event.. .we all got a chance to stand right next to these jumpers...and they are so tall and in such incredible shape. It's really a thrill.
