Woman, 82, arrested in deadly Kapa'a crash

LIHUE, Hawaii -

Police have identified the 52-year-old motorcyclist who died following a traffic crash in Kapa'a on Saturday as Thomas Newsome.

The driver of the sedan involved in the fatal collision was arrested for second degree negligent homicide.

Charlotte Kaui, 82, of Kapa'a, was later released pending investigation.

According to a preliminary police report, the motorcycle and sedan collided as Newsome was heading north on Kuhio Highway and Kaui was turning left onto Lanikai Street from the southbound lane of the highway. The incident occurred at approximately 5 p.m.

Newsome was transported to Wilcox Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Kaui was also hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.  She has since been released.

Police continue to investigate the crash.
