Water truck collision kills pedestrian on Big Island

Crash happened on Highway 11 near mile maker 20

VOLCANO, Hawaii -

On the Big Island, one man is dead after being hit by a water truck.  It happened around 7:30 p.m. Friday night on Highway 11 near the 20 mile marker.

Police said a 1998 Peterbuilt water truck was traveling North when it struck a man who was walking on the roadway.

According to police, the area has no streetlights and is a common area for pedestrian accidents.

The victim was taken to Hilo Medical Center where he died.

The driver of the water truck was not injured.  It's unknown whether speed or alcohol are factors in the crash.
