A water main break flooded the area surrounding McCully street, stopping many people in their tracks.
A traffic light still on was leaning and on the brink of falling. The 16-inch water main broke just after 5 p.m. Thursday afternoon on McCully and Kapiolani right in front of the McCully Shopping Center.
The break flooded the intersection and surrounding streets for blocks, leaving residents stranded for hours.
"We were stuck out of our apartment because it was flooded. We walked around the corner, and it was completely closed off with water, and we walked along the sidewalk and couldn't cross the street because it was still flooded," said Lahela Kauihana.
And drivers were stuck too, if not in water, then in traffic. Stores usually full during dinner time, like the Curry House, was empty, hours before closing.
"We have some water pressure, but we might have to shut down completely," said Gary Kaneshiro, assistant manager of Curry House.
Customers had a hard time getting to the shopping center. Those brave enough took the risk of walking across Mccully Street, through the mess.
"It was almost up to my knees over here," said Stephanie Murray.
The water was turned off in the evening, crews are expected to work through the night and possibly past Friday morning to fix the break. The Board of Water Supply says two customers, one condominium and one business, was affected by the break.
