Maui County Police say the body of a man was found in a home damaged by fire in Wailuku Wednesday morning.
Officers responded to the home on Kakae Place just before 6:30 a.m. They were advised that the 52-year-old homeowner was believed to have set his home on fire and fired gunshots within the house.
Police say the rear of the house was on fire and officers heard gunshots coming from within the house.
After fire crews extinguished the flames, the charred remains of a man was found along with three dead dogs and one injured dog. The dog was turned over to a local animal rescue company for treatment.
Police believe the remains is the 52-year-old homeowner, but the body has not yet been positively identified.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
