The USS Michael Murphy returned to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Tuesday morning after providing assistance to the HMCS Protecteur of the Canadian navy.
The USS Michael Murphy is returning with 19 family members who were transferred from the Protecteur. It's common for family to join crew members returning from long missions.
The 44-year-old Protecteur experienced an engine fire and is under tow to Pearl Harbor and is expected to arrive on Thursday.
The fire left 20 sailors with minor injuries. The Canadian navy says the Protecteur was in the Pacific Ocean north of Hawaii when the fire broke out last week.
The U.S. Navy dispatched guided-missile destroyer USS Michael Murphy to help.
The Canadian navy says a doctor on board treated sailors suffering from dehydration, exhaustion and smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
