UH biology labs ready for school year, other projects fall behind
One project down, a half a dozen more to go
The University of Hawaii was happy to open its doors to tours of the recently renovated biology laboratories in Edmondson Hall.
$15 million dollars later it can boast a state-of- the-art facility, the first of about a half a dozen on this dean's wish list.
"What we don't have is the facilities to support the world-class research that we do and the world-class teaching that we do," said Bill Ditto, Dean of the College of Sciences.
Ditto hopes this energy-efficient lab will help to change that.
While this project was completed on time, several others have fallen behind.
Gartley Hall, one of the oldest buildings on campus, remains mostly a shell.
The month $12.5 million worth of work was supposed to be completed, but crews said they are just now beginning to pour the floors.
There is no word on how much longer, and how much more expensive the work will be.
There is also the ongoing construction on the Campus Center carrying a price tag of $38 million dollars.
The new facilities including a gym and fitness center which were to have been ready for students to enjoy last year, but it's far from being complete.
And work on the new Ching sports facility on the lower Manoa campus was to have wrapped up last month, but crews are nowhere near finished.
UH officials told the Board of Regents last month that the delays at the Ching Athleitic Complex had to do with utilities.
The hang-up may be of particular concern to the athletic department because of a requirement by NCAA to have its facilities in place by Jan. 28.
UH athletics is banking on occupying the first floor locker and offices by January 28th to meet its obligation. But it believes the rest of the facilities won't be ready until spring of next year.
The Ching complex is to provide a boost to women’s sports--fulfilling requirements of Title I X , the country's gender equity law.
Once the facility is finished, it will help boost women's soccer, cross-country track and sand volleyball programs.
