Twilight fire scorches Pupukea home, leaves 9 homeless
Fire completely torched second story of Alapio Road home
Nine people narrowly escaped a devastating fire in Pupukea on Oahu's North Shore.
It started early Thursday shortly after midnight. How it started is still a mystery.
The devastation left behind at the home on 59-542 Alapio Road is shocking.
The second floor of the two-story home is gone.
“It’s a two story house. They have a big 7-foot wall and the fire is just coming over it,“ said neighbor Ron Artis, who lives next door.
Artis ran outside to open the gate on the fence that he shares with the home being swallowed by flames.
“I notice these people trying to get out the back entrance of the property because the front entrance is engulfed in flames,” said Artis. “I go over to a guy trying to pull it over so I help open it all up and about four people come running out.”
Nine people were home at the time. A family of five who live there along with four other guests staying at the house.
The family who lives at the house had been renting it for the last two years. The owner of the home lives in Las Vegas.
Resident Mitzi Bokolas said it was chaos when the fire broke out.
“I looked upstairs and there was a flame coming out of one of the rooms. Then my daughter came from another room and we all started screaming and yelling and running around. Then there’s a lady living in the back, so we went and got her and everybody got the animals together and we all came running outside and we were just standing there, bewildered,” said Bokolas.
One of the visiting friends was sleeping in the room where the fire broke out, but wasn't injured.
But two cars were destroyed, along with a brand new Harley motorcycle.
The family's dogs made it out safely; their pet cat did not.
“We don’t know how it started. They’re going to investigate and I’m going to be curious to find out,” said Bokolas.
The family said they plan to stay with friends for now.
