HONOLULU -

It's back to school Monday for thousands of public school students across the state.

Some private schools are also reopening this week.

The Hawaii Department of Transportation's Beat the School Jam campaign advises motorists to give themselves a little more time for the morning commute.

Students going to neighborhood schools are encouraged to walk, and to look both ways before crossing the street.

Also, they're encouraged to make eye contact with drivers to make sure they see pedestrians.

Drivers are being asked to focus on the road, avoid distractions, and watch out for bicyclists and pedestrians.
