SUV crashes into Hawaii Kai tree, hospitalizes driver

HONOLULU -

A 29-year-old man suffered serious injury Thursday morning after he crashed his SUV into a tree on Kawaihae Street.

The crash happened at 6:15 a.m. near the address of 465 Kawaihae Street in Hawaii Kai.

According to police and witnesses the man lost control of his SUV before crashing head-on into the tree. Roadways in Hawaii Kai were damp Thursday morning following moderate rainfall.

He was reportedly pinned for "quite some time" until a fire rescue crew extricated him and transferred him to the care of emergency medical personnel.

He was taken to Queen's Medical Center with unknown injuries.

Police initially shutdown traffic on Kawaihae Street following the crash but began contra-flowing the lanes until the scene was cleared.
