A 59-year-old man died Sunday morning after being stabbed multiple times underneath the H-1 viaduct in Mapunapuna.
Police say the stabbing happened at the end of Kilihau Street before 6:12 a.m. near a homeless encampment that is frequented by an estimated 70 to 80 people. Witnesses say the stabbing resulted after a fight between the 59-year-old and a younger man.
The victim was identified by witnesses as "Wongy." He was transported from the scene to Queen's Medical Center in critical condition where he later died.
After releasing information about the suspected stabber to the public, police arrested a Kalihi man around 1:30 p.m.
24-year-old Herwin Magbulos was arrested near his home after witnesses identified him as the culprit in the stabbing.
He faces second-degree murder charges.
Near the scene of the stabbing is a cavernous homeless encampment that has been swept several times but continues to grow, according to members of Living the Word Ministries. Their church is a stone's throw away from the scene where the fatal stabbing occurred.
Those who live under the freeway added that the growing population has also resulted in an increase in violent crimes. Brad Pareisa has lived under the freeway for decades
"I see more young people coming over here, and more people coming up," Pareisa explained. "More young people coming over here and crime goes up in the neighborhood"
Homeless residents say those incidents increase on Friday and Saturday nights, when many are drinking or doing drugs.
"Knives we all got knives," Pareisa said. "Some kind of knife something to protect yourself. The outsiders are the ones who cause all of the trouble."
While the fatal stabbing shocked members of the nearby church congregation, it also reminded them of the importance of reaching out to Mapunapuna's homeless residents.
"I want to help out and prevent that from happening again," said Tim Harris, a member of Living the Word Ministries. "We try to bring them up and empower them to go back out, we've helped some with housing, medical and food stamps."
