PBN: Some sit on wanted land in developing Kaka'ako
As Kaka'ako developers make big offers, some small business owners still won't give their plot up, according to a report by Pacific Business News.
Van Takemoto and his family own Island Fender, and altogether more than an acre of land here and there in Kaka'ako. They were offered more than $3 million for a piece of their land, but he says it's not for sale. Change isn't something Takemoto is looking for. His grandmother even used to have her house on the plot of land.
"I grew up in Kaka'ako I've always worked here and I probably will always work here until I retire," said Takemoto.
Developers will have to wait for that retirement. Their shiny new condos will have pockets of streets lined with automotive shops like Takemoto's. C&S Service says it turned down an offer, it's not looking to sell either.
"Eventually you know it'll be a place very costly and hard to operate because of the people and the noise and dust and whatever else we produce," said Dwayne Nasu with Acme Fender and Paint Shop.
"I still think the people who live in Kaka'ako will need a car and will still drive. They probably won't have a place to wash, maybe we will change to a car wash," said Takemoto jokingly.
He'll be keeping his collision repair business.
"We have people that work and feed their families here so that's more of our concern that our business continues and people have a job," said Takemoto.
For some that lease they aren't so lucky. Patti Akiyama's been leasing in Kaka'ako for more than 40 years. The owners have sold, she said for millions, and that means she'll have to pack up soon.
"It's a wonderful location for our business. We are wholesalers so it's easy to Waikiki, easy to the airport, if we have to go to the windward side we are kind of central, so to move is going to be hard. We have a lot of stuff in the corner we have to move out," said Patti Akiyama with Marue and Gertz, LTD.
