Monday was the day that the state normally does its monthly test of the Emergency Alert System. However, on the Big Island some sirens did not activate, according to Hawaii County Civil Defense Director Darryl Oliveira.
Oliveira says about 17 sirens did not go off in the Hilo and Puna areas. Civil Defense crews were trying to troubleshoot the problem.
Once the problem is identified and repairs are made, Civil Defense will do a follow-up test to make sure the sirens work. Civil Defense officials will notify the public when the test will be scheduled.
