Sequestration, budget cuts force BayFest 2013 cancellation

 UPDATED 4:52 PM HST May 06, 2013

BayFest, a community-wide summer family festival held aboard Marine Corps Base Hawaii, is canceled in 2013 due to sequestration and budget constraints, according to Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

The festival, held at the Marine base since 1991, is an island-wide attraction drawing 25,000 attendees to Marine Corps Base Hawaii over two-and-a-half days to enjoy mainland and local entertainment, carnival rides, fireworks, military static displays and more.

Marine Corps Base Hawaii says BayFest requires significant resources from numerous MCB Hawaii departments and Marine Corps Community Services, all of which are impacted by potential furloughs and fiscal limitations.

The Marines say many of the workers who staff the event are expected to be furloughed.
