Hawaii residents joined the Surfrider Foundation and North Shore group End Turtle Traffic in a rally Sunday against the Department of Transportation's plans to relieve traffic at Laniakea Beach.
The Department of Transportation plans to place concrete barriers to block access to the parking lot near the beach. The goal is to relieve traffic and increase pedestrian safety by reducing the number of jaywalkers. The barriers will be up for one month. The DOT says it will monitor the effectiveness of the barriers to determine if they should stay.
The Surfrider Foundation says there are serious traffic congestion and safety concerns in the area, but it believes there are alternative solutions to the problem that should be considered.
