Pearl Harbor bike path closes temporarilyUPDATED 7:13 PM HST Oct 21, 2013Video Transcript
you use the Pearl Harbor Bike Path through Aiea. The city is temporarily shutting down a large stretch of the popular trail for safety reasons... but some say the closure will lead to another safety concern. KITV4's Justin Fujioka explains. Kevin Garcia walked into a surprise along the Pearl Harbor Bike Path when he found out it'll be closed between McGrew Loop and Hekaha Street beginning Wednesday. Kevin Garcia: "THAT'S SIGNIFICANTLY LONG. THAT'S A LONG STRETCH FOR FAMILIES AND KIDS TO BE WALKING ON THE STREET INSTEAD, YOU KNOW?" Bicyclists, joggers, walkers -- everyone who uses the trail through this area will now have to use alternative routes, like the busy Kamehameha Highway. Tunya Agao: "OH MY GOD. THAT'S... THAT'S NOT TOO SAFE, ESPECIALLY FOR BICYCLING." Tunya Agao works along the trail and says the path is usually quiet during the work week, but gets packed at peak times. Tunya Agao: "USUALLY GOING HOME TIME AND IN THE MORNING TIME, YOU KNOW?" She says weekends are by far the busiest. Tunya Agao: "I USUALLY USE IT FOR FUN, YOU KNOW. LIKE WE RIDE BICYCLE SO WE COME THROUGH HERE." The city says some beams on the bridge behind the Pearl Kai Shopping Center and another behind HomeWorld are rotting and need to be fixed for safety reasons. Kevin Garcia: "YEAH, I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND THAT BECAUSE YOU KNOW, I'VE BEEN WALKING THIS PATH FOR... MMMM, OVER 15, 20 YEARS AND THERE'S BEEN NO REPAIRS DONE TO IT. SO I CAN SEE WHY THE THING WORE DOWN. BUT I WISH THEY HAD AN ALTERNATIVE. A SAFER ALTERNATIVE TO THAT BEFORE THEY HAD SHUT IT DOWN." Tunya Agao: "WELL, I GUESS BOTH OF THEM IS UNSAFE TO CERTAIN POINTS. BUT WE CAN MAKE ALTERNATIVE CHANGES. BUT HOPEFULLY PEOPLE WILL SEE THAT BEFORE THEY MAKE THEIR SCHEDULE FOR THE DAY." So again, the Pearl Harbor Bike Path will be closed between McGrew Loop and Hekaha Street beginning Wednesday. It's scheduled to reopen on Thanksgiving Day.
