Officials identify Hilo man killed in crash

Police have identified him as Joseph Nieves Junior, 23

HILO, Hawaii -

Police have identified the man killed in Friday night's crash along Kalanianaole Avenue as 23-year-old Joseph Nieves Junior of Hilo.

Witnesses said the car was traveling Hilo-bound when it crossed the center line and struck a mail box, sheared a utility pole, and struck a stone wall.

Nieves was pronounced dead at the scene while a 18-year-old man was medivaced to the Queen's Medical Center.

Police say speed and alcohol appear to be factors in this crash.  Both men were wearing seatbelts.  A negligent injury investigation is underway.
