More tests needed in OCCC inmate death probe
3rd inmate death in 2 months
The medical examiner's office is trying to determine how an Oahu Community Correctional Center inmate died.
An autopsy on Mark Davis Jr. was conducted Wednesday, but the medical examiner's office says additional tests are needed to determine a cause of death.
The Department of Public Safety says Davis was found dead in his cell Tuesday afternoon. Davis was committed to the Hawaii State Hospital after being found not guilty by reason of insanity for raping and killing a 6-year-old Puna girl. He allegedly committed new crimes and was at the jail pending trial.
It's the third death at the jail in two months. One inmate committed suicide and the other was beaten by a cellmate.
Public Safety Director Ted Sakai says there will be a review of policies and programs for the mentally ill at the facility.
