The Honolulu medical examiner says the cause of death is pending further investigation for a 35-year-old man who died after he was detained by police Monday in Waimanalo in an auto theft case. However, the medical examiner did say there were no "assaultive-type injuries."
Family members say Stephen Dinnan was taken off of life support around 6:20 p.m. Tuesday at the Castle Medical Center. He was pronounced brain dead earlier that morning.
Family members say Dinnan was unfairly beaten by police. They say Dinnan did not steal the vehicle and was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Police say at around 5 p.m. Monday, officers attempted to locate a stolen vehicle at a Waimanalo residence. Two men immediately fled the area.
One of the men was located and fought off and resisted attempts to detain him, according to police.
Shortly after the man was brought under control, he became unresponsive and resuscitation efforts were initiated.
The Honolulu Police Department has opened an investigation into the incident.
