Maui landfills reopen after compost fire

Delays expected as crews catch up on missed trash pickups

PUUNENE, Hawaii -

The Central Maui Landfill and Olowalu Recycling Center were reopened Tuesday after a compost fire started on Sunday, according to Maui County officials.

The flames have been extinguished, but the public should expect some delays as crews catch up on missed trash pickups.

Maui County firefighters were on the scene at the Central Maui Landfill - Refuse & Recycling Center, where a blaze at the EKO Compost site has closed down operations Monday, and possibly Tuesday, according to Maui County officials.
