HONOLULU, Hawaii -

A Maui boat owner was spared jail time but will have to pay $50,000 to a swimmer he injured two years ago.

Gary Vinge pleaded no contest earlier this month to the negligent injury charge stemming from an accident in the waters off Maui in 2011.

That collision lead to the amputation of the right arm and two fingers from the left hand of John Caughlin, a swimmer who was completing an open-ocean channel crossing from Lanai to Kaanapali Beach.

Last week, a state judge ordered Vinge to pay $700 in restitution per month until the money is paid in full.

Caughlin declined to comment on the case, but according to his blog, he has been recovering from the injuries and has returned to swimming.
