Man's body retrieved from Kalapana lava field

Friend: Victim was hiking all day and was in physical distress on lava field

KALAPANA, Hawaii -

Big Island fire officials say the body of a 56-year-old man was found Tuesday on a lava field near the Kalapana Gardens subdivision.

Fire crews responded to the scene at around 3:15 p.m. to a lava field near the Kalapana lava viewing area.

There was a report of a person unable to walk in Kalapana.

After fire crews arrived at the scene, a friend of the man explained they were hiking all day and the victim was in physical distress on the lava field and he was unable to find him.

A ground and air search was conducted and the man was found near the Kalapana Gardens subdivision.

The man was transported by helicopter to a medical unit where he was pronounced dead.

Police are investigating the circumstances in this case.
