A Maui Fire Department rescue team helped a 63-year-old man who fell about 25 feet from a scenic lookout along Honoapiilani Highway Friday.
The call came in after sundown from the lookout at the 9-mile marker along the highway between Maalaea Harbor and Lahaina.
Maui Fire Department spokesman Lee Mainaga said the man was complaining of back pain and sore ribs. Mainaga said 12 rescue personnel put the man in a basket and hiked him out over "very rocky terrain and elevation."
"It was a tough extrication due to the topography," Mainaga said.
The victim was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition. Mainaga said it was unclear whether the man was a resident or a visitor.
