An 83-year-old man was hospitalized Wednesday after he was assaulted in Chinatown, police said.
The call came into authorities around 3:20 a.m. after a woman found the victim unresponsive, but the authorities say the attack may have happened hours earlier.
The victim, Mamerto Eddie Semana, has severe heard injuries and is in critical condition.
Arnold Felix, who lives on the street, said he thinks he knows what happened. "Yesterday he said he went to the bank to get his money," Felix said, referring to the victim cashing a pension check.
"I keep telling him, 'Don't sleep alone. Get back to where you sleep,' because at least we have neighbors, because something might happen, but this man is (hard-headed)," Felix said.
Felix said he's lived next to Semana for about a year.
"Last night he was gambling out there where all the Filipinos gathered," he said. "We're just asking anyone or any witnesses to please call (police)."
