Emergency responders report that a man in his 20s was critically injured after approaching a downed power line in a Kailua neighborhood Sunday.
It began when Hawaiian Electric officials say a a power line became dislodged on Ohana Street around 9 a.m.
According to fire officials, the man approached the downed lines with a fire extinguisher when smoke began to billow from the downed lines. He was injured standing several feet away from the line.
Paramedics report transporting the man in critical condition.
The downed line also caused a power outage in the area affecting about 1,700 customers.
Power was restored to most of those homes within a half hour, with several homes still without power while repairs were conducted to the lines.
HECO officials say that downed or damaged power lines should not be approached, and that at least ten feet of space should be given to a downed line.
