Man accused in Makiki murder appears in court
Baker lived at Zen Buddhist center for nearly a year
A man charged with murder in the stabbing of a Honolulu real estate agent whose body was found wrapped in a carpet made his first court appearance Tuesday.
Vernon Baker's bail is set at $200,000.
Mary Beth San Juan's ex-husband found her bound and gagged body wrapped in a carpet in the driveway of her home last week. The medical examiner's office says she was stabled multiple times.
A teacher at a Zen Buddhist center says Baker lived there for nearly a year. Center teacher Michael Kieran says he seemed like a gentle person.
Police have said San Juan and Baker, 41, knew each other.
Baker's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
