The National Cemetery Administration says there are a limited number of in-ground burial sites available at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.
Officials say the sights became available after the Department of Defense identified the remains of previously "unknown" service members. The families of those service members then decided to re-inter the remains at other cemeteries.
The NCA says it will assign open grave sites on availability.
Funeral homes or families can contact the cemetery direct at (808) 532-3720 or contact the National Cemetery Scheduling Office at 1-800-535-1117 to inquire about availability at the time of scheduling the burial.
NMCP remains open to all first inurnment requests of cremated remains for niches in the columbarium.
