The brother of a victim who died in a Lanai plane crash says he was shocked by his sister's death. He says his family was also devastated.
Kenneth Kern remembered his sister, Kathleen Kern, who was born in Canada.
Kathleen moved to Hawaii in 2009 according to Ken, a retired physician who has lived on Oahu for decades. Ken says Kathleen loved to swim and loved Hawaii. She also had a passion for urban planning, something she was interested in ever since she was young.
Kathleen worked for the Maui County Planning department.
"She wanted to involve the community of Lana'i so she was over there trying to make a master plan. She was aware if you don't have planning, you end up with a city that doesn't look so pretty or function as well as it could," said Ken.
Kathleen was the youngest of 8 children and died at age 50.
